Resume
Writing for All Stages in Your Career
December 10, 2008
On December 10, The Professional
Development Committee hosted a Brown Bag discussion on "Resume Writing
for All Stages in Your Career," featuring Lisa Keathley, Director, Career
Development Center Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service Georgetown University.
Ms. Keathley focused on what it takes to get a resume to the "maybe"
pile. In structuring a resume, she described key steps: skills analysis, scope,
quantification, and results. She offered different structures for entry-level
positions, senior positions and career changes. Stressing the importance of
customizing a resume for each position, participants were urged to keep a
comprehensive, updated list of experiences to draw upon. And while many resumes
will not be one page, Ms. Keathley discussed the value of the one-pager as
an exercise that requires choices be made. The cover letter, and its contents,
also was discussed as it is part of the resume "package." A lively
Q&A followed.
