WIIT Professional Development Event: Giving Successful Presentations
|
|
On March 14, the second event of this year's Professional Development series featured Don Swenholt, an executive trainer with more than 25 years of experience. Mr. Swenholt discussed making good presentation a "top 10%" presentation, and avoiding the "bottom 10%" presentation. He described the three characteristics of a successful presentation as elements of service, pleasure and relationships. He also gave tips for structuring a talk for easy listening.
In a lively question and
answer session, Mr. Swenholt addressed appropriate ways to gesture (that is,
"substantially"), whether and how to move when speaking, and described
powerful stances. He also described characteristics of presentations by women
that can detract from their effectiveness; these include head tilts, certain
vocal patterns, qualifying statements, and the use too many conjunctions.
The effective and engaging presentation was partly delivered to Motown background
music, and prizes were given to many of the 25 attendees.
