Summer 2007 News

Letter from the Editors

The editors of Women in International Trade Newsletter want to welcome
you to the first issue of the 2007-2008 year. This newsletter is an important part of our efforts to inform you about WIIT's activities. It includes recent events, a calendar of upcoming events, information on our many programs and projects, and articles written by WIIT members.

In this issue, we would like to introduce the new 2007-2008 Officers and Board members, as well as identify their past service to and association with WIIT.

Also included, are articles by WIIT members that offer distinctive perspectives and address sub-topics related to the intersection of trade and security. Dana Townsend and Mike Turner's article on export controls gives valuable information on federal regulations and expert advice on ways corporations can improve on compliance programs. Anku Nath's article offers insight on how the U.S. and India can pursue a healthy trade relationship while maintaining strategic security goals. Steven Jesseph provides insight into the global apparel industry's collaborative effort to meet certain labor and environmental standards, while enhancing security procedures to prevent the smuggling of illicit goods in apparel shipping containers. Adrean Scheid Rothkopf and Monica Guevara discuss the recent North American Leaders' Summit in Montebello, Quebec with U.S. President George W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Mexican President Felipe Calderón, and provide insight into the opportunities and challenges facing North America. Debra Cheng clarifies the complexities of foreign investment and new CFIUS legislation post 9/11.

We hope you find this issue informative and engaging. We welcome your comments and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Manka Azefor, Kristin Wedding, and Helen Wicecarver
