The
Current Financial Crisis: Why Help Autos?
by Jeanne Dangerfield Broad, Senior International Advisor for Blakey and
Agnew, and former Director of International Trade Policy at General Motors
The auto industry plays
a major role in the global economy by promoting economic growth, job creation
and the advancement of technology and representing a key component of international
trade. Yet, the industry has been one of the sectors hardest hit by the current
financial crises, generating a debate on the merits of whether the U.S. government
should be providing short-term financial assistance to the U.S. auto sector.
The fact is that U.S. vehicle sales have fallen from annual rates of more
than 17 million units to what may be a 10.5 million-vehicle market in 2009.
Global sales, including previously fast growing emerging markets such as Brazil,
Russia and India, are falling as well. And, average new vehicle transaction
prices, which rose in the 2004-2008 period in the U.S., fell in 2008. Clearly,
consumer willingness to commit to the purchase a new vehicle plummeted along
with the value of investments and the erosion of job security. Moreover, the
tight credit market has meant that even those ready to purchase might be denied
the credit to do so.
The
Impact of the Economic Crisis on the Shipping Industry and Trade Consequences
by Joan M. Bondareff, Of Counsel, Blank Rome LLP, Washington, DC
{With thanks for the invaluable assistance of Janice Weaver, Director of Policy,
U.S. Maritime Administration}
The shipping industry is not immune from the current economic recession. In
fact, companies are laying up container ships and laying off workers around
the world. Bulk carriers have also not fared well as exports of dry bulk goods
have declined. Tanker companies are doing somewhat better, but this is just
in comparison to their brethren.
The Return of
Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008, by Princeton Economist,
NYT columnist, and Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman.

WIIT ANNOUNCEMENTS
WIIT Charitable Trust and CWT Education Fund Join Forces
The Association of Women in International Trade's WIIT Charitable Trust (WIIT Trust) and the Consumers for World Trade Education Fund (CWT Ed Fund) have entered into an agreement that effectively combined the two non-profit organizations and will allow the WIIT Trust to assume responsibility for the CWT Ed Fund's operations, including its innovative electronic trade library.
According to WIIT Trust Committee Chair Nicole Bivens Collinson, "The combination made sense because the two educational funds have the same mission. Consolidation will enable the WIIT Trust to maintain and add to the library. It will give WIIT members more access to greater resources in the WorldTradeLibrary.Com while continuing to provide additional resources to the greater trade community."
"The CWT Ed Fund saw in the WIIT Trust an organization that not only would value the content catalogued in the electronic trade library, but also would make effective use of the website as a teaching tool," CWT Ed Fund President Barbara Wanner said. "We are delighted that the WIIT Trust will introduce the electronic trade library to a broader audience and ultimately create a more informed discussion about trade issues."
The WIIT Charitable Trust was created on February 1, 2001 by The Association of Women in International Trade, Inc. (WIIT) to fund charitable, scientific, and educational activities in international trade. Its mission is to promote public knowledge and understanding of international trade and international business and strengthen the role of women therein by being a valued source of information and by sponsoring research, educational programs, and information-sharing activities.
The Consumers for World Trade Education Fund (CWT Ed Fund) was established December 29, 1980. Its mission has been to educate communities in America about the benefits of international trade and investment and to address concerns about the global economy.
