WIIT is honored to host an off-the-record discussion with Dawn Shackleford, Assistant USTR for WTO & Multilateral Affairs - AND the first woman appointed Chair of the Trade Committee at the OECD; and Marion Jansen, Director of the Trade and Agriculture Directorate and first woman in this role. Join both of these leaders as they review the impact and priorities of the OECD agenda on trade; as well as share leadership lessons on how women can succeed in getting appointed to leadership; and how to manage the chair role when you get it. Discussion will focus on having an impact, both to drive greater progressive, consensus-based discussions; action by a leading multilateral institution AND career growth. 
Dawn Shackleford is the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for WTO and Multilateral Affairs. In this capacity, she is responsible for coordinating U.S. trade policies in the WTO, with lead responsibility in the General Council and Council on Trade in Goods as well as oversight for WTO institutional issues and the WTO standing committees. Her office is responsible for negotiations on trade facilitation and trade and development and negotiation and implementation of agreements in the WTO. Her team also leads bilateral negotiations related to customs matters, government procurement, subsidies and trade remedies, technical barriers to trade and regulatory cooperation. Ms. Shackleford also leads trade issues in the OECD and UNCTAD.
She previously served as the Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for India in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) from 2014 to 2016. In this role Ms. Shackleford led negotiations on bilateral trade issues with India and was responsible for managing the U.S. - India Trade Policy Forum.
Ms. Shackleford previously served as the Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for WTO and Multilateral Affairs from 2009 to 2014 and was the lead U.S. negotiator for the new WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement. Dawn also served as the lead negotiator on the customs and trade facilitation chapter of the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement, WTO accession negotiations and was a senior advisor on issues pertaining to the WTO and its standing committees. She was the U.S. Representative to the OECD Trade Committee and a lead advisor on trade issues concerning the UN and other international organizations.
She joined USTR in 2004 serving as a Director in the Office of WTO and Multilateral Affairs and served as a lead negotiator on the government procurement chapter in the U.S. FTA negotiations with Oman and the United Arab Emirates. She also worked on various WTO, APEC, G20, UN and NAFTA trade policy issues.
Prior to her work at USTR, Ms. Shackleford served as a policy analyst within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and in the Department of the Navy from 1998 to 2004 and as an adjunct professor at American University's School of International Service from 2003 to 2005.
She holds a Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs from American University in Washington, DC, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics from the University of California in Santa Cruz, and also studied at the National University of Ireland in Galway, and Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany.
Marion Jansen is the Director of the Trade and Agriculture Directorate at the OECD. She previously held senior positions in the World Trade Organization, the International Labour Office and the International Trade Centre. In these roles, she has provided support to trade negotiations and to WTO dispute settlement. She has represented different organizations at the G7 and G20 level, led critical interagency collaborations and major interdisciplinary research networks.
Marion Jansen holds a PhD in economics from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) and undergraduate degrees from the University of Konstanz, Toulouse and Passau.  She has published widely on international trade and global economic governance and notably co-edited the volumes “Women Shaping Global Economic Governance” and “Making Globalization Socially Sustainable”.
A German national, Marion Jansen grew up in the Netherlands. Next to German and Dutch, she speaks English, French, Italian and Spanish.
